Tsukuba International Exchange Fair 2008

Tsukuba International School provided some entertainment at the Tsukuba International Exchange Fair on Sunday, May 11, 2008.

Tsukuba International Exchange Festival 2008

With the help of “Amigos de TIS”, the students performed the Do Re Mi song from the Sound of Music. The audience joined in the fun and sang along to the children’s actions.

Amigos de TIS is comprised of Luis Sartor, who hails from Argentina, Junichi Tanaka, a music teacher at Meikei High School, and Akehide Yoguchi, a former student of Meikei. In addition to accompanying the kids’ performance, the band played a collection of Latin American favourites that got the audience clapping and singing along, warming up the crowd nicely for the performers that followed.

Student Report by WI: Second Pottery Lesson

In art class we did pottery with Michiko Sensei. We made plates and cups. The plate was easy to make but the cup was difficult. The Emperor’s wife owns Michiko Sensei’s pottery. I want to do pottery again!

Student Report by SI: Earth Day

On April 22nd, 2008 it was Earth Day. We had special events. First, we drank salt water and we couldn’t drink all that was in the cup. It was salty! Then, Ms. Bzdel showed us that if all of Earth’s water was 1L, then only 49mL is fresh water and only 1mL is water we can get and drink. I was surprised!

Next, in the woods near the school we saw a lot of garbage thrown away, so we cleaned it up. There was glass, lighters, bottles, and other things.

Last, we made eco-bags. When we go shopping we can use them so we don’t have to use plastic bags. This way we can reduce carbon dioxide levels. It was a fun Earth Day.

Student Report by MF: Visit to National Institute of Animal Health

On April 18th, 2008 my friends and I went to NIAH during Science Week in Tsukuba. It stands for National Institute of Animal Health. Dr. Yoshi told us that rabbits’ hearts beat faster than people’s hearts. We listened to our hearts beat and he was right! We used a stethescope so we could hear the heartbeats.

Next, we learned about animal diseases and how animals get sick. We saw some parasites with a microscope. They looked yucky! I did a survey and got an animal cup.

Lastly, I saw black cows, brown cows and other cows. They were eating hay and they said moo moo moo. I was having fun.

Student Report by WI: Digging Bamboo Shoots

We went to a bamboo forest to dig up some bamboo shoots but we dug up too many. Some bamboo shoots were easy to dig up some weren’t. When we finished, our friends made us lunch. There were so many kinds of food, for example takenoko rice. I want to go to the takenoko forest again.
